The public will have a chance to give input on what they believe the best use for the old airport should be.
A public meeting held by the University of North Carolina Center for Competitive Economics will be at the Halifax County Cooperative Extension Auditorium in Halifax on October 24 at 6:30 p.m.
Halifax County Development Commission Executive Director Cathy Scott said there has been some preliminary discussions by the center on uses for the property, including using it for sports and recreation or having it revert to farming uses.
In another matter today, the board honored the retirement of Harry E. “Gene” Harris from the sheriff's office on September 23.
Harris retired as a deputy after spending five years at the sheriff's office and was a longtime officer and detective with the Weldon Police Department.
In a resolution honoring Harris, the county said, “Harry 'Gene' has also served in many positions of honor in the community and state as well as being a dedicated public servant to the citizens of Halifax County.”
Sheriff Jeff Frazier presented Harris his sidearm and badge. “He was always on time and always had your back. He was just a real good employee and he served the citizens well.”
Harris thanked the county for the chance to serve. “I wish the county all the luck in the world. As long as I live and breathe I will continue to work for Halifax County.”
