A man who was on the lam since May was arrested Friday following a report of a trespasser in the Myrick Estates community on Lake Gaston.

The road to the capture of Jackie “Squirrel” Putney began on May 14 when Halifax County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the 400 block of Amos Jones Road in the Littleon area on a stabbing call.

Detective J. Puhak said investigating deputies discovered a victim had not been stabbed but sustained injuries from falling on a glass aquarium during a fight, causing severe lacerations to his arm and back.

Puhak and Detective R. Rooks began an investigation and Putney, 23, of Littleton, was developed as a suspect after he was reported to have run from the scene. Puhak said that investigation yielded probable cause to charge Putney with assault inflicting serious injury.

Since then Puhak said Putney was allegedly ducking law enforcement until a call around 9 Friday night in which Putney was named as a trespasser in Myrick Estates.

Corporal M. Almendarez and his dog Dusko were sent to the area and faced minor resistance from the occupants. Putney was found allegedly trying to escape from a bathroom window and was apprehended by the corporal without further incident.

He was jailed on $5,00 bond and has a September 21 court date.

The victim in the may case has recovered from his injuries.“This is a good example of how wanted individuals can only hide for so long. The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office prides itself in its ability to apprehend fugitives for its victims and for justice,” Puhak said.
