A Rich Square man was arrested and charged with possession of illegal mushrooms and marijuana Tuesday night following a traffic stop by the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

Lieutenant C. Emerson Carroll made the stop for a motor vehicle violation shortly after 9 p.m. on 13 Bridges near Barnhill roads.

Captain A.M. Harris said Carroll identified the driver as Darrell Ray Boone, 42.

During a search of the vehicle with assistance from narcotics Agent D.K. Newsome and his dog, Duri, 16 grams of mushrooms, marijuana and a digital scale were located and seized.

Newsome charged Boone with felony possession of scheduled I; maintaining a vehicle/dwelling for a controlled substance; simple possession of marijuana; possess marijuana paraphernalia and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He received a written warning for the motor vehicle violation and a July 17 court date for the drug charges.

Harris has contacted Rich Square police Chief Tommy Staton and there will be a follow-up investigation, Harris said in a statement.
