The Roanoke Rapids Graded School District Board of Education is looking to fill the seat of member Joey Briggs, who announced his resignation from the board Wednesday.

“We are certainly sorry Mr. Briggs made the decision to resign,” board Chair Jay Carlisle said in a statement. “He has been an excellent trustee and has added to our discussions as we make decisions to best serve the children of this district. We wish him well in his future endeavors.”

School system spokesman Les Atkins said in a statement the board is seeking written notification of interest from individuals who are eligible for and willing to fill the vacant seat, which expires in November of 2021.

The statement says a position on the board requires a great deal of time.

There are at least two monthly meetings, committee meetings, training sessions and attendance at some student activities.

More information on the duties of a board member can be found on the North Carolina School Board Association webpage at this link.

In order to be eligible to fill a seat on the board an individual must be a registered voter and must reside in the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District.

Individuals may check with the Halifax County Board of Elections to determine their status as a registered voter.

Individuals may check with the superintendent of the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District to determine the boundaries of the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District. The boundaries of the school district are not the same as the Roanoke Rapids city limits.

Interested individuals should file a written and signed notification of interest, using a form which may be downloaded from this link or picked up from Central Services office at 536 Hamilton Street, Roanoke Rapids.

The completed form should be submitted to Carlisle at Central Services no later than 4 p.m. on July 18.

The notification of interest must contain a statement that the individual is eligible for and willing to fill the vacancy.

In addition, the notification of interest should contain additional information regarding qualifications for and interest in the office.
