A Roanoke Rapids man remains in the Halifax County Detention Center without the opportunity for bond after he was charged in a shooting Tuesday on Waldo Street, according to the city’s police department.
Chief Lawrence Wiggins said patrol officers and detectives responded to the 500 block of Waldo Street after receiving a shooting call and located the victim inside. The victim, identified as Robert Thompson, was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Investigators learned that Hunter Medlin, 37, fled the scene shortly after the shooting. Officers located him at a nearby residence on Maple Street and conducted a vehicle stop when he was seen leaving that residence.
Medlin was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and possession of a firearm by a felon.
In 2020, Medlin was convicted of felony possession of a Schedule II substance in Halifax County Superior Court and served 24 months of supervised probation, according to court records.
At his first district court appearance Wednesday, Medlin waived his right to court-appointed counsel. He is scheduled for another district court date on April 8, Wiggins said.
“The Roanoke Rapids Police Department would like to thank the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and the Halifax Regional Drug and Gang Task Force for their expedient response and assistance in this incident,” the chief said. “Their aid led to the swift arrest of the suspect just hours after the shooting incident occurred.”
