A Roanoke Rapids man remains in the Halifax County Detention Center after he allegedly stole two pizzas from a delivery driver and physically and sexually assaulted her Monday night.

Mark Everette Joyner, 62, was assigned a public defender today after signing an affidavit of indigency, according to court records, and is scheduled for another district court appearance on May 28. He received a $5,000 secured bond.

Major Anzell Harris of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said Community Action Team Sergeant G. Martin responded to a local business following a call that a driver had been assaulted around 10 p.m.

The victim and witnesses told Martin that two pizzas were snatched from her and that she was grabbed around her neck, waist and buttocks on Simmons Street in Roanoke Rapids.

The warrant for sexual battery says that Joyner grabbed the driver’s buttocks and pulled her towards him for the purpose of sexual gratification.

Martin obtained warrants for felony larceny from a person, assault on a female, and sexual battery.

Martin, along with Lieutenant R. White and Deputy I. Smith, responded to the Simmons Street address and arrested Joyner.
