A 35-year-old Weldon woman died following a car crash this morning. A toddler, who was ejected from the vehicle, is in stable condition, according to First Sergeant Levern Bynum of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Bynum said the crash occurred around 8:30 a.m. as Paris Gatling was on the Exit 176 ramp off Interstate 95 in Northampton County to turn onto Highway 46.
According to a preliminary investigation by Trooper C.A. Hill, the vehicle traveled off the roadway to the right and struck a street sign. The vehicle then overturned down a steep embankment and came to a stop on its roof, ejecting both Gatling and the toddler, Bynum said.
Two other children in the vehicle were not ejected and are in stable condition. Gatling was transported to ECU North Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Contributing factors remain under investigation, Bynum said.
