Halifax County rangers with the North Carolina Forest Service, along with firefighters from Enfield and Darlington, worked to contain a 30-acre wildfire in the 28000 block of Highway 561 this afternoon.
County Ranger Jason Miller said the forest service issued a warning ticket to an individual burning yard debris without a permit. A second offense will result in a $50 fine plus court costs. While no burn ban has been issued in the county, Miller emphasized that a permit is still required.
The fire started around 1 p.m., with winds, warm temperatures, and drought conditions aiding the spread. As of this report, the fire has been contained, Miller said.
He noted that firefighters kept the fire from encroaching on a house while rangers deployed a bulldozer to prevent further spread. “The drought, warm weather, and winds make it worse,” Miller said.
Those who choose to burn yard debris must have a permit and are advised to keep a rake, shovel, and water hose nearby while burning.
