With no opponent anticipated in November, Chris Kidd is expected to be sworn in as the Halifax County Clerk of Superior Court in December.
According to unofficial results, Kidd defeated Weldon attorney Ronnie Reaves on Tuesday, collecting 3,960 votes to his opponent’s 2,588. It was a decisive 60.48 percent to 39.52 percent victory for the longtime justice system employee.
Kidd expects the transition to be seamless. ”I'm already working over there, so I don’t have to worry about campaigning so much right now,” he said.
He believes his professional history and reputation helped him seal the victory. “I started out working at Social Services. I was a magistrate for several years, working with different law enforcement agencies and officers, as well as people from the hospital.”
Kidd added that having an established rapport with the community over the years was a key factor in his success.
Looking forward, Kidd wants to see more community involvement from the clerk’s office. “I want people to understand exactly what we do and what services we offer so we can be of more assistance,” he explained.
Kidd will become the first known Black clerk of court in Halifax County history. “It means a lot because you’ve got people who worked in the system before who would have been qualified,” he said. “I’m just blessed to be able to do this at the right time. I had support from the former clerk and from the judges; it was just a perfect coming together at the right time.”
Kidd says he plans to remain authentic in his new leadership role. “I’m going to try to bring my personality to this office. I want to make sure the staff is happy and everybody’s comfortable working here. I want to keep going and be able to work with everyone in the building — from the judges’ chambers to the DA’s office, the tax office, and the register of deeds.”
He emphasized a team-oriented approach to the workload. “I look at myself as a clerk working with a team of people. You can’t do it by yourself because there’s so much to do around here.”
