The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued a winter storm warning for all of central North Carolina, effective through midday Sunday.

This is a particularly dangerous windy storm system that will bring heavy snow followed by record-breaking cold temperatures.

General accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are expected across the region.

The Roanoke Rapids area is forecast to receive 4 to 6 inches, with a 1 in 10 chance of seeing up to 10 inches.

Locations along and southeast of the I-95 corridor have the highest potential for snow bands that could produce 12 or more inches.

North winds of 25 to 35 mph, with infrequent gusts up to 45 mph, will create blowing and drifting snow. Brief blizzard conditions are possible, particularly in the coastal plain.

Meanwhile, a cold weather advisory is in effect until 1 a.m. Sunday for wind chills between 0 and 9 degrees.

An extreme cold warning is in effect from 1 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday. Wind chills are expected to drop as low as 5 below zero.
