The plan for a special commemorative Halifax County license plate in observance of America’s 250th anniversary has been scrapped.

Instead, the events, projects, and fundraising committee for the Halifax County America 250 will move forward with a custom front plate option.

A letter has been sent to those who purchased the plates in advance, along with a $30 check from Halifax County Business Horizons. The memo line of the check notes "Halifax 250 Commemorative License Plate Refund." The application for the special plate is also included with the letter and refund check.

“After careful review, [the committee] has decided to suspend sales of the special license plates and instead move forward with a custom front plate option that will allow broader participation without the complex state process,” the letter says.

The letter also asks “for your support for the upcoming Halifax 250 front plate program and other initiatives planned as we approach the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Halifax Resolves on April 12, 2026.”

Muzette Kiger, chair of the committee, said, “We're really disappointed to have to make that decision. The timing was not going to allow us in just a few weeks to make up the numbers that we needed in order to take it to the General Assembly.”

The committee needed to have 500 orders so state lawmakers could approve the license plates.

“Halifax Horizons was pleased to serve as the fiscal partner with the Halifax County Semiquincentennial Commission for the Specialty/Commemorative License Plate,” Halifax County Business Horizons President Scott Aman said. “Since offering the plate in February, there was concern that meeting the requirement for the sale of 500 license plates might not be feasible. The commission voted to pivot to a custom front plate that does not entail a regulated process. All license plate purchases were refunded and NCDOT returned Halifax Horizons’ deposit for the process.”
