Two people died and another man is in custody for obstruction of justice in a shooting that occurred this afternoon at the New Dixie Mart traditionally known as Presto.
Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Lawrence Wiggins said in a statement this evening that officers responded to a shooting call around 1 p.m. at 142 Julian R. Allsbrook Highway.
Dasan Banks of Roanoke Rapids was found deceased outside the store. Anthony Shearin was found inside the store with gunshot wounds. He was initially taken to ECU North and then to Greenville for further treatment, but later died from his injuries.
Wiggins said Ju-Quan Letrae Rawles of Roanoke Rapids was charged with obstruction of justice for actions following the shooting.
Due to the complexity of the situation, Wiggins said, no additional details are being released. “The RRPD is thoroughly investigating this case and working to ensure all facts are established and supported by evidence before any additional actions are taken,” the chief said in the statement. “The RRPD would like to thank the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office for responding and providing additional support to this investigation."
