Roanoke Valley high schoolers are invited to explore the world of coding this summer.

The Center for Energy Education will host a four-day coding camp where students in grades 9-12 will learn the fundamentals of Python, a programming language used for tasks in web development, data analysis, machine learning and automation.

The interactive introductory class will encourage students to use their creative, problem-solving skills to build upon their critical thinking skills.

C4EE will host rising ninth through 12th graders for a no-cost, four-day summer coding camp session.

Halifax and Northampton County youth are welcome to attend camp July 21-24 which will be held on the center’s campus at 460 Airport Road, Roanoke Rapids.

The camp runs Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. Lunch will be provided.

Dr. Walter Lowe, C4EE’s science advisor and retired Stanford University physics professor, will lead camp instruction in the basics of Python coding. The tool helps users logically and efficiently process data and automate tasks.

“Students will learn computer think and speak, using a perhaps new-to-them, limited word language while working toward a mastery of learning how to learn things,” said Dr. Lowe. “Coding is learning to think in a precise, concise world.”

The class will inform students about the presence of coding in today’s artificial intelligence-filled world. Computers for the class will be provided. Students are expected to have a basic familiarity with coding.

Community partners and special guests will also enhance the camp experience for participants.

“Technical literacy among our community is a priority at the center and this coding class provides a valuable foundation for our high school youth,” said Mozine Lowe, C4EE’s executive director. “I expect this coding camp will launch a curiosity that will lead to pursuit of AI-inspired career opportunity exploration toward impactful, sustainable solutions for strong and healthy communities.”
