The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office reported the following, according to Major Anzell Harris:

Today the sheriff’s office begins participating in the North Carolina Governor's Highway Safety Program Memorial Day Click It or Ticket campaign.

“This will be a two-week campaign,” he said. “Buckle up and drive safely.”

The state Department of Transportation said in a statement today that buckling your seatbelt is a vital component of driving safely, and local law enforcement will be out over the next two weeks to make sure you do.

The Governor’s Highway Safety Program’s Memorial Day Click It or Ticket campaign will continue through June 1.

It is an annual statewide campaign that promotes safe driving by buckling your seatbelt.

“Never hesitate to buckle your seatbelt — it could be the difference between life and death,” said GHSP Director Mark Ezzell. “It’s too risky to take that chance."

In addition to public outreach, there will be increased law enforcement patrols throughout the entire campaign to ensure compliance with the state’s seatbelt law.

In 2023, 492 unbuckled drivers were killed in car crashes, according to the North Carolina 2023 Traffic Crash Facts report.

So far this year, 158 unbelted passengers or drivers died in crashes.

Meth seized from moped driver

A Roanoke Rapids woman remained in the Halifax County Detention Center as of this report and was scheduled for a first district court appearance this morning after she was arrested for meth possession and carrying two small children with her on a moped Saturday.

Community Action Team Sergeant D. Harrison was patrolling the area of Highway 158 and Zoo Road when observed Lacey Taylor, 38, operating a moped with one helmeted child in her lap and another helmeted child on the back. Taylor was not wearing a helmet, Harris said.

Harrison initiated a traffic stop and Taylor stopped at a convenience store.

While speaking with Taylor, Halifax County Emergency Communications advised that the registration plate of the moped was reported stolen out of Gaston.

Taylor was detained and during the encounter a plastic baggie containing what appeared to be methamphetamine was seized.

Taylor was arrested and charged with felony possession of a schedule II controlled substance, misdemeanor child abuse and operating a moped without a helmet.

She received a $3,500 secured bond. A followup hearing in district court is scheduled May 22.

Community Action Team Sergeant G. Martin and Patrol Sergeant A. Wood assisted.
