The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to interim Chief Bobby Martin:

On March 26, 2019 the Roanoke Rapids Police Department responded to the area of the 800 block of Rapids St. in regards to shots being fired in the area. Officer M. Hunsucker arrived in the area but was unable to locate anything in the area. While Officer Hunsucker was still in the area another call came out about a subject shooting at someone in the 800 block of Cedar St. Officer M. Hunsucker responded to that area and made contact with the victim who was able to provide a description and the identity of the shooter. The victim was able to give a description of the vehicle the suspect was driving also.

Officer M. Hunsucker knowing who the suspect was contacted Lt. J. Baggett in regards going to the area of Mills st.  to look for the suspect. Lt. J. Baggett, Sgt. Adam Salmon, and Officer D. Newsome arrive at a home on Mills st. along with Deputies with the Halifax county Sheriff’s Office. Upon arriving at the home Lt. Baggett identifies the suspect vehicle used in the incident. While the officers were in the yard checking the vehicle, shots were fired from within the home. The officers took cover and then proceeded to give commands for the suspects to come out of the home. The suspect came out of the door then went back in quickly, but eventually came out with his hands up along with another male that was in the house also. Upon further investigation of the vehicle and the home, Corey Butler 33, of Roanoke Rapids was identified as the person who was shooting at the victim on Cedar st. Officer Hunsucker arrested Corey Butler and charged him with assault with a deadly weapon, discharge a weapon in the city limits, and go armed to the terror of the people and was placed under a $5,000 bond with a April 25, 2019 court date.  The other subject in the home was identified as Carol Beckelman III and was not involved with the shooting incident. The Halifax County sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident at the home on Mills. St. The two suspects were taken into custody without anyone getting injured and the victim in this case was not hurt during the shooting. A 223 rifle was located under the couch inside the residence with ammunition with silver in color casings. While searching the vehicle 3 silver in color 223 casings were located in the passenger area of the vehicle. All the firearms and ammunition were seized for evidence and analysis purposes along with safekeeping.

Lt. J. Baggett, Sgt. A. Salmon, Officer D. Newsome, Det. Sgt. O. Wiltsie, and Officer B. Council along with units from the Halifax County Sheriff’s office assisted.
