A Roanoke Rapids man is in custody and is charged with numerous counts related to a rash of break-ins of businesses and residences which were reported in late January and culminated with his arrest on Tuesday.

Captain Harold Phillips of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department said Matthew Scott Gay, 33, was initially charged on counts related to a motor vehicle break-in which occurred on January 19.

Since that arrest he has been charged with other counts related to the theft of scrap metal, mechanical equipment and other items, Phillips said. A dollar amount was not immediately available.

On Tuesday he was charged with felony breaking/entering of a motor vehicle, misdemeanor larceny, and misdemeanor possession of stolen goods.

The subsequent charges lodged against him include:

One count of felony breaking or entering, seven counts of felony larceny, seven counts of felony possession of stolen goods, one count of misdemeanor larceny, one count of misdemeanor possession of stolen goods, six counts of first-degree trespassing, one count of second-degree trespassing, and one count of obtaining property by false pretense.

He remains in the Halifax County Detention Center without the opportunity for bond due to a fugitive warrant. He had a district court appearance today and another scheduled for February 27.

“We are still actively investigating these incidents to determine other individuals involved and attempting to locate stolen property,” Phillips said. “The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and the Halifax Regional Drug and Gang Task Force have been instrumental with assisting the Roanoke Rapids Police Department in this investigation and we can not thank them enough for their generous help in the last few weeks.”

Anyone with information on these or other thefts is encouraged to call the police department at 252-533-2810, Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444 or the Crimestoppers website
