Halifax Community College has received an anonymous donation to purchase a new set of mannequins for teaching cardiopulmonary resuscitation to both emergency workers and members of the public.

The mannequins include an infant, men and women.

“This donation will help save lives through our training of emergency workers and the general public. This department of the college has been very effective in training our local emergency personnel and helping to save lives,” says Dr. Michael Elam, president of Halifax Community College.

“This donation allows us to teach the professionals and the community lifesaving techniques with the latest monitoring equipment to make sure CPR is done correctly,” says Michael Clements, Fire and EMS coordinator and instructor. “There is no telling how many lives have been saved over the years since we have been teaching life-saving CPR. I would bet the number is larger than we imagine. This gift gives us the ability to better train citizens in the Roanoke Valley.” C

First created by Asmund Laerdal in the 1950s to teach CPR, the mannequins have saved thousands of lives. According to legend, the original Resuscitation Annie’s face was modeled after an unknown French girl who drowned in Paris in the 19th century.

“We greatly appreciate the donation from an unnamed non-profit as this allows HCC to teach from the latest technology in regards to saving lives. HCC is always looking for better ways of teaching the latest methods of life-saving. Donations make a huge difference for HCC in the classroom and the community,” says Allen Purser, executive director of the HCC Foundation.

HCC strives to meet the diverse needs of our community by providing high-quality, accessible, and affordable education, training and services for a rapidly changing and globally competitive marketplace.

HCC will continue to be the catalyst for educational, cultural, and economic progress in the Roanoke Valley by anticipating and responding to the needs of an evolving global community.
