Beginning this evening, both the Historic Courthouse in Halifax and the social services building on Highway 301 will be cast in green light through November 12.
Commissioners for the second year in a row passed a resolution supporting Operation Green Light.
The operation is an initiative between Halifax County, the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners, the National Association of Counties and the National Association of County Veteran Service Officers
The social services building will be lit in green in light of the county veteran service office being transitioned to that department in July.
Operation Green Light’s mission is to show support for veterans of all military conflicts, as well as raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by many veterans and their families and the resources that are available at the county, state, and federal level to assist veterans and their families.
“Halifax County stands behind and beside our veterans, and we are so pleased to visibly show our support during the week leading up to Veteran’s Day by lighting two of our county facilities in green for Operation Green Light,” said Chairman Vernon Bryant. “Our veterans have fought for our nation and our citizens, as well as for the rights of people in other countries. In the aftermath of war, some of our veterans continue to fight internal battles here at home by facing complex issues of Post- Traumatic Stress. The Halifax County Board of Commissioners encourages everyone to join us in displaying a green light at your home, business, or community facility in support of our veterans and their families.”
Residents, business owners, churches and civic organizations are encouraged to participate in Operation Green Light by changing one or more light bulbs either on the exterior or interior of their home or facility to a green bulb.
While this event is focused on the week of Veterans Day, participants are encouraged to continue shining green lights year-round.
People can share their participation on social media using the hashtag #OperationGreenLight and tag Halifax County NC in their posts.
The historic courthouse is at 10 N. King Street and the DSS building is at 4421 Highway 301 in Halifax.
