EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

The City of Roanoke Rapids is accepting applications for the following positions:

Municipal Clerk

The City of Roanoke Rapids is offering the opportunity for a highly motivated individual to serve as the Municipal Clerk. Responsibilities include but not limited to maintaining the official records of the City, including ordinances, proclamations and minutes; preparing agenda packets for the City Council; attending all Council meetings, including taking and transcribing minutes of meetings; maintaining the homepage of the City’s website, including the pages for the Clerk, City Manager and members of the City Council; publishing the “Roanoke Rapids City Page”, a weekly column in the local newspaper and on a local news website to keep citizens informed of upcoming meetings, job vacancies, etc.

The Clerk will also provide administrative support to the City Manager.

The Clerk must have excellent organizational and follow through skills, the ability to handle multiple jobs simultaneously and the ability to work well with fellow staff, members of the public and governing body in a professional and courteous way.

Preferred qualifications

Membership in NCAMC and/or IIMC; CMC Certification at a minimum, and a minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Clerk or Deputy Clerk. Proficiency in MS Word required and proficiency in Publisher and Excel preferred.

The hiring range is $45,000-$49,000, based upon qualifications and experience.

Equipment Mechanic II

An employee in this class serves as a skilled mechanic in the garage. The employee performs responsible and specialized skilled mechanical work on a variety of automotive, construction and specialized equipment which will include, but not limited to, mechanical work repairing gasoline and diesel motors and engines, and performing preventative maintenance, particularly on heavy equipment. The work requires operation of various test equipment and hand tools in order to support the work in both inside and outside environments.

Qualifications include

Graduation from high school supplemented by course work in repair and maintenance of heavy equipment and engines and considerable experience in the automotive and heavy equipment repair

Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and supervisors

Must possess a valid North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License.

Sanitation Worker

An employee in this position performs work as a member of a crew led by a Sanitation Equipment Operator in loading and unloading refuse over an established route. Applicant must hold a valid NC Driver’s License. Position is open until filled.

Street Maintenance Worker II

An employee in this class performs a variety of semi-skilled, and occasionally skilled labor tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets and storm drainage. Work involves operating heavy equipment such as backhoes in tight situations.

Essential duties and tasks include but are not limited to:

Operates backhoes, loaders and other equipment in situations requiring skills and care such as around underground and overhead utility lines and other situations

Performs minor preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment

Responds to public requests and questions with courtesy and tact

Patched asphalt with gravel, hot asphalt, cold patch and other materials; operates air hammers, rollers, and other light equipment; etc.

Requirements

Must have good communication and customer service skills

Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with citizens, supervisors, and other employees

Must have a working knowledge of tools, materials and equipment used in general construction and maintenance work

Must possess a valid Class C North Carolina Driver’s license.

Recreation Program Assistant II

Employee in this position plans, coordinates and supervises recreation seasonal program activities and provides administrative support to the staff of the recreation center and to the director.

Minimum Qualifications

Must possess knowledge of office procedures along with thorough knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel

Must also possess the ability to work in a fast paced environment with frequent interruptions Graduation from a four year college or university with a degree in recreation administration or related degree preferred or equivalent amount of experience in this related field.

Part-Time Public Works Worker

An employee in this position performs skilled technical and trades work in the maintenance and repair of buildings, grounds, facilities, and equipment.

Job duties include but are not limited to grass cutting, leaf collection, street sign maintenance, and other duties necessary in the Public Works Department.

Lifeguard (Part-Time)

An employee in this position assists in all aspects of operations of the recreation center swimming pool and aquatic center. The employee has the responsibility for making sure that the facility is maintained in good condition, to ensure that participants in swimming activities and classes are in a safe and clean environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Must hold American Red Cross Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED certification.

Must be able to complete ½ mile swim in under 20 minutes.

Essential Duties and Tasks

Teaches Red Cross swimming lessons.

Provides routine pool maintenance to ensure cleanliness and safe environment for patrons.

Works as a team to provide supervision of a large number (sometimes as many as 300 pool patrons – team is comprised of approximately seven lifeguards).

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Aquatic Supervisor.

PUBLIC NOTICE

The Proposed FY 2016 - 2017 Budget for the City of Roanoke Rapids has been submitted to the City Council and is on display for public inspection in the Office of the City Clerk (2nd floor of City Hall). A public hearing on the proposed budget is scheduled for the June 14, 2016 City Council Meeting to be held at 5:15 p.m. at the Lloyd Andrews City Meeting Hall.
