A man who was released from prison in January for an assault on two Roanoke Avenue women was arrested today after he led Roanoke Rapids police on a chase from Becker Drive and Old Farm Road to Tenth Street and Park Avenue.

Ian Barkley Coles, 22, faces numerous charges in the aftermath of the chase, which damaged a patrol car and a passenger vehicle around 11 a.m.

Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Thomas Hathaway said Officer Scott Blythe observed something suspicious about the vehicle, an older model Honda, and learned through a check it had fictitious tags.

Blythe attempted to stop the vehicle, but Coles reportedly sped away down Becker Drive, hitting Detective Corey Dixon's car as well as a Subaru WRX.

Captain O.L. Morgan photographs the car Coles was driving off Tenth Street.

He continued down Becker Drive to Tenth Street where he stopped the car and got out of the vehicle in the vicinity of Hunam Restaurant. He was captured after a brief foot chase by Officer Jason Williams.

Coles was released from prison on January 20 after his conviction on the assault charges on May 31, 2012.

Coles had other run-ins with Roanoke Rapids police in 2010, one where he made a 20-foot downward leap from an apartment building in the 200 block of Roanoke Avenue.

Today Coles was charged with fictitious tags, unsafe movement violation, driving while license revoked, felony possession pf a firearm by a convicted felon, hit and run, careless and reckless driving, running a red light, speeding 70 miles per hour in a 35 miles per hour zone, speed to elude arrest and resisting arrest.

His bond and court date were not immediately known as of this report.

Hathaway said up until today there was no evidence that Coles had been in trouble since his prison release.
