Multiple agencies, including the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, which is the lead investigating unit, are looking into possible ties between the victim and a man charged last September in the death of an Edgecombe County woman.
Christine Marie Boone, who would have been 43, was reported missing to the Rocky Mount Police Department January 16, 2007, Chief John Manley Jr. said in a press release.
She was last seen on August 25, 2006, at 801 South Grace Street in Rocky Mount by a family member.
On March 5, skeletal remains were found in a wooded area behind 98 Nasturtium Lane, Scotland Neck, by Halifax County Sheriff’s Office personnel and others working with them. “Our agency was contacted by law enforcement officials pertaining to this matter. We joined the Halifax County Sheriff’s Department, N.C. State Bureau of Investigation, and Edgecombe Sheriff’s Department in this discovery and investigation. As such, the skeleton remains were positively identified as being Christine Marie Boone by the medical examiner in Greenville,” the chief said in the news release.
Major Bruce Temple of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said no further information beyond the press release could be discussed because there is more work to do. He also declined to comment on whether the woman was murdered.
Manley continued in the press release that 98 Nasturtium Lane is a vacant mobile home, however, “We know that this residence was where Antwan Maurice Pittman lived in 2006. We want the public to know that while this case is complex and ongoing, law enforcement is working diligently to resolve this matter.”
The chief explains Pittman is mentioned because he is in custody for a similar case in Edgecombe County and because Boone’s skeletal remains were found close to his former house.
Pittman was arrested in September 2009 for death of Taraha Nicholson and is in the custody of the Edgecombe County Sheriffs Office.
“We offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Christine Boone,” the chief said in the news release. “We need the public’s assistance in providing any information they may have.”
