A South Carolina man was charged Friday in the theft of more than $1,000 worth of Adidas merchandise from a Roanoke Rapids sporting goods store.

The arrest of 32-year-old Gregory Alexander Hamilton Ybarra came after police received a be on the lookout notification around 9:45 p.m. for a man who committed a larceny in Greensville County, Roanoke Rapids police Chief Chuck Hasty said in a statement.

The notification indicated the man was driving on Interstate 95 and was headed south.

Officer J. Shelburne spotted the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop at exit 171.

During the stop Ybarra, of Surfside Beach, South Carolina, was identified as alleged the suspect in the Virginia larceny.

Shelburne arrested and charged Ybarra with no operator’s license and being a fugitive from the state of Virginia.

Officer R. Cross recognized Ybarra from the larceny of Hibbett Sports which occurred on April 24.

He was charged with larceny and possession of stolen goods for the Hibbett crime.

“His attention to detail and remembering a past larceny helped lead to the arrest of this individual,” Hasty said this afternoon.

It was not clear how long Ybarra had been in the area, Hasty said.

The Hibbett larceny occurred when the suspect briefly browsed and then asked an employee to retrieve some shoes from the back.

While the employee was gone, the suspect grabbed 15 Adidas T-shirts, five Adidas jackets, and 10 pairs of Adidas pants and fled the store.

Ybarra received a $50,000 bond and has a June 6.
