Roanoke Rapids police Chief Chuck Hasty confirmed in a statement, however, a third student was transported to a trauma center for further treatment.

He said this evening those taken to the trauma center sustained serious injuries when Karmesha Danielle Bowers, 25, lost control of her vehicle shortly before noon today.

Officer D. Daniels charged Bowers with no operators license, careless and reckless driving and contributing to the delinquency of a minor since two children — ages 6 and 5 — were in the vehicle with her at the time of the crash.

The children, who were not injured in the crash, were not restrained in the vehicle, Hasty said in the statement.

Bowers, who was also not injured, was released to a responsible person and has an April 9 court date.

Hasty confirmed the students were headed to Florida on a trip to rebuild homes.

Hasty said the crash is still under investigation and more charges could be filed.

Preliminary investigation indicates Bowers accelerated and lost control of the vehicle while exiting the McDonald’s parking lot off Julian R. Allsbrook Highway.

The vehicle ended up in the Cook Out driveway where it straddled the median separating Cook Out from McDonald’s.
