A Roanoke Rapids man died Friday night after he was struck by a vehicle on Highway 158 near Brigman Street in the Roanoke Rapids area.

Sergeant R.W. Goswick of the state Highway Patrol said Nathan Higgs, 55, died at the scene.
Higgs, Goswick said, was in the center lane of travel when he was struck by Wendy Howell, 37, of Roanoke Rapids around 9:30 p.m.
Howell, who was driving with hazard lights on because she was taking a passenger with a medical emergency to the hospital, passed two cars in the turn lane. Higgs was in the center turn lane when he was struck by the left front side of the vehicle. His body hit the driver’s side windshield before the vehicle came to rest in the turn lane.
Goswick said the state Highway Patrol intends to charge Howell with improper passing and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
Trooper S.R. Corn filed the initial report.
