The Roanoke Rapids Public Library Thursday received a $2,000 grant which will go towards replacing outdated social studies book.

Head Librarian Jeff Watson said the grant from the Upper Coastal Plain Learning Council will help the library purchase the books which will be geared toward fifth through seventh grade curriculum. The learning council, based in Rocky Mount, is part of North Carolina State University’s McKimmon Center for Extension & Continuing Education.
Some of the books currently in use date back to the 70s and 80s. A book on South Africa dates back to 1986 while a book on Kenya dates back to 1985, Watson said.
The grant requires no match from the city.
Betty Jones, a teacher success outreach specialist for the council, said the organization serves five counties in the region — Nash, Edgecombe, Wilson, Halifax and Northampton. “One of passions is libraries. We know you have no money. The community has to fund your wonderful facility.”
Kathy Lawson, also an outreach specialist with the council, said having taught in the area, “We do have a special heart for this area. Once you teach a student, they’re yours forever. It’s fulfilling to me how dedicated you are. We believe in libraries. For many it’s a major source of information.”
Watson said he was appreciative of the grant as well as the support of city administration and council.
