Randal Tavaris Garner, a Halifax County Detention Center inmate who was mistakenly released, was taken into custody around 3 this morning.

He has been returned to the jail, Sheriff Wes Tripp said in a statement.

Tripp said in a statement released Tuesday on June 10 Garner was confined to the detention center for probation violations in both district and superior courts for driving while license revoked.

On June 11, bail was posted for the bond in district court and a detention officer who Tripp declined to name released Garner without bond being posted for the case in superior court.

The detention officer was disciplined, although the sheriff declined to discuss the nature of the disciplinary action.

An order for arrest was issued.
