The three-part process first involved a conditional use permit hearing to take 11 acres of land out of the Villages at Cross Creek planned unit development; a public hearing to change the rezoning of the property to R-40 residential and the final step to consider the conditional use permit to allow the expansion of the cemetery located off Smith Church Road.
Those who spoke against the measures were not necessarily against the expansion of the cemetery, but more concerned it could lead to an erosion of the planned unit development they bought into when Villages at Cross Creek was initially built.
“It's chipping away at what we paid for,” said Stephen Stokes. “I believe our tax values will be affected … We are going to lose our value.”
Donald Vincent, who led the charge against the MaSuki apartment proposal which remains in the court system, said, “I'm not worried about the cemetery, what worries me is (a residential zoning) is chipping away at the planned unit development.”
Sandy Showalter, who has owned the cemetery since 1977, said entrance will still be through Smith Church Road. “We have no intention of running through Cross Creek. There will be no drive through. What we want to do is to continue with what we have. As far as having any wild parties, that's not going to happen.”
In another matter this evening council agreed to approve a letter of intent to enroll the Halifax-Northampton County Airport in a five-year program to assist with runway maintenance and safety issues at the facility.
The five-year program is administered by the state Division of Aviation Airport Safety and no local funds are required.
