Gladys Mae (Stauffer) Spivey, 84, of Jackson, NC, passed away on Thursday, March 21, 2024, surrounded by her children.

A graveside service is scheduled for 11:00 AM on Monday at Jackson Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at Askew Funeral Home in Jackson on Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

Gladys was born in Palm, PA to Edwin and Alverda (Haas) Stauffer.

After graduating from Upper Perkiomen High School in Pennsburg, Pa,  Gladys worked in a glove factory until she turned 21 and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force to see the world. While in service, she met and married William “Billy” Spivey. They were married 39 years before his death in 2003.

Gladys believed in making yourself useful and doing things right the first time. The only thing she loved more than being a wife and mother was being a grandmother – or G Ma as her grandsons called her. Gladys enjoyed spending time with family and friends, working in her yard, reading, and eating ice cream, especially mint chocolate chip. She was a long-time member of Jackson Baptist Church.

She is survived by their three children, Constance “Connie” Rhem (Stephen) of Wilson, Cynthia “Cindy” Donley (Larry) of Greenville and William “Bill” Spivey Jr. (Travis Johnson) of Columbia, S.C.; three grandsons, Spencer Rhem of Wilmington, Connor Rhem of Greenville and U.S. Army SPC Grant Donley of Colorado City, CO; and two siblings, Shirley Nester and Donald Stauffer; Sister-in-laws, Nelda Slade and June Parker (John).

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her  sisters Betty Volk and Joyce Hess, and brothers, Ellis Stauffer, Francis Stauffer and Terry Stauffer.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Wounded Warrior Project at Wounded Warrior Project Memory Donation or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at St. Jude Memory Donation.
