One of the people arrested Tuesday night in the Wilton Cotton murder was freed today after it was discovered that the person believed to be the actual suspect, who is still at large, possibly stole his identity.

Police need the identity of this man.

The man, Keon Ryland, reportedly told Roanoke Rapids police detectives that he believes his identity was being used unlawfully.

Detective Bobby Martin said it is still believed, however, that the seventh person wanted in the September 24 murder on Gordon Drive is nicknamed Butt-Butt, but his actual identity is unknown at this time.

After examining the new information received and confirming that Ryland was the person he said he was, the charges were dismissed.

“Everyone else has been properly identified,” Martin said this afternoon.

He said investigators need the public's help in identifying the man pictured above.

“No, it's not a setback,” Martin said. “It's just an obstacle we have to overcome. In almost 40 murders I've worked, first as an investigator with the sheriff's office and now with the police department, this is the first time we've ever ran into anyone using someone else's identity in charges of such magnitude. ”

Of the six arrested thus far, Martin said, “Through our investigation we have been able to link them to this not by chance or by accident.”

Martin said he told Ryland, “This was nothing personal against him. We rectified the situation and made sure he was set free.”

Anyone with with information is encouraged to call the police department at 252-533-2810, the sheriff's office at 252-583-8201 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
