(Editor's note: This afternoon we were informed by Roanoke Rapids police that Keon Ryland was freed after evidence of identity theft was discovered. Aspects of the story dealing with Desmond King remain correct. The content concerning Ryland has been edited to reflect that he was released and police continue to look for the seventh suspect.)

One man wanted in the Wilton Cotton murder surrendered Tuesday night while the other was taken into custody in rural Nash County and delivered to Halifax County this morning. The one arrested in Nash County was later freed.

Roanoke Rapids police Detective Jeff Davis said this morning Desmond King's family encouraged him to surrender soon after reading media accounts on him being wanted in the September 24 crime.

King, 20, of Weldon, was jailed without the opportunity for bond.

The arrests had brought the total number of people charged in the shooting death of Cotton and the shooting of an unnamed victim to seven. However, with the release of Ryland that number is now back to six.

Davis said investigators continue to investigate and are looking at other leads in the case.

Once found and identified, the seventh suspect will be charged first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery, felony conspiracy, going armed to the terror of the people and discharging a weapon in the city limits with full extradition.

King faces the same charges as the seventh suspect with the exception of going armed to the terror of the people and discharging a firearm in the city limits with full extradition.

Davis declined comment on whether the fact only the seventh supect and Rodney Joyner were charged with going armed to the terror of the people meant they were the alleged triggermen in the case.

He also declined comment on whether the fact that all seven charged in the murder face conspiracy counts meant that this was a planned robbery attempt.
