The official kick-off of the long holiday weekend was Thursday night and the Weldon checkpoint, according to Chief Mark Macon, was part of the Governor's Highway Safety Program's 20th anniversary of the Booze It and Lose It campaign.
The police department worked the checking station in conjunction with the Northampton County Sheriff's Office and the Garysburg and Roanoke Rapids police departments.
Participation in the checkpoints gives police departments and other law enforcement agencies points for to get new equipment. Through past programs, Macon said, the department has received stop sticks and vests. “There's various different things you can get.”
This year the department aims to get radar.
Officers participating in the campaign wrote 23 citations and gave one warning ticket to a driver who didn't have their license with them.
Officers wrote the following citations:
• Seven for no operators license.
• Two for driving while license revoked.
• Three for improper child restraint.
• Six for expired registration.
• Two for inspection violations.
• One for possession of marijuana.
Macon said for the remainder of the holiday weekend the police department will have patrols. “We'll be trying to keep the highways safe and looking for people who drink and drive.”
