The Chaloner Recreation Center pool repair project has received a $10,000 boost from a local ministry.

City Manager Joseph Scherer during this evening’s city council meeting recognized the efforts of Phil Hux who, “helped persuade the board of Angel’s Closet ministries to agree to donate $10,000 for the project and is working with other individuals and local organizations to encourage them to donate monies for the project as well.”
Scherer also noted, “Mr. Hux has been very involved with other charitable activities in the city over the years and I feel he should be recognized for his voluntary actions to help improve the water recreation opportunities for the Chaloner community.”
Angel’s Closet, which helped with the skate park, “felt like there was a need to help with the pool,” Hux said this evening. “Our goal is to help children in the area.”
Hux said the skate park turned out to be “a very good project. We feel like the pool is a historic and vital part of the Chaloner community.”
Scherer’s announcement comes after council earlier this month agreed to move forward with repairs of the pool, a decision based on significant savings it expects to receive once refinancing of the remaining debt on the Roanoke Rapids Theatre is approved.
Parks and Recreation Director John Simeon told council during his report the project engineer is currently gathering data and working on drawings which are required by the county health department. “Once these drawings are approved by the county, the engineer will move forward with requests for proposals.”
Simeon, referring to the Angel’s Closet donation, said following the meeting, “I’m glad to see community support.”
He said would have a better idea on a completion date for the project once the city receives the RFPs.
