A mother and her two young children perished in a residential fire near Murfreesboro in Northampton County early this morning, the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald of Ahoskie reports.

The names of the victims have not been released, but according to Conway Fire Chief Albert Vann, the mother was 31-years-old, while the children were ages 10 and 2.

Vann said the cause of the fire is under investigation by the North Carolina SBI.
“They (SBI) were on the scene early this morning,” said Vann.

Vann added that his department received the call around midnight to respond to a fire at a residence located on US 258 south of Murfreesboro, near the Pinetops Road intersection.

“We arrived to find a singlewide mobile home fully engulfed,” Vann stated.

He said it took a little more than one-half hour to bring the blaze under control. At that time firefighters were able to locate the bodies.

Members of the Woodland Fire Department also responded to the scene, as did the Murfreesboro Fire Department. Combined, the three departments battled the blaze with eight units and 34 firefighters.

Vann said the last fire unit cleared the scene at 7:30 a.m.

Northampton EMS units from Woodland and Jackson were also dispatched to the scene, as were deputies with the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office.
