A man was shot late Monday night in the 500 block of Oak Street and was airlifted to a trauma center for further treatment.

Few details were immediately available this morning as Roanoke Rapids police Chief Chuck Hasty said in statement a canvass of the immediate area by officers revealed no one saw or knew anything about the shooting, which occurred around 10:30 p.m.
When officers arrived they found the victim lying on the porch of a residence with several gunshot wounds. Hasty declined to say how many times the man was shot.
The victim was initially transported to Halifax Regional before being airlifted out.
The victim did tell officers during preliminary investigation a person wearing all black, his face covered, approached from behind a residence and shot him.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Investigator Jeff Davis at 252-533-2810 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
