The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a man allegedly tied to a dogfighting operation in the Five Points area.

Chief Deputy Scott Hall said in a statement Daquinn Blount, 21, of Roanoke Rapids, tends to frequent the South Rosemary and Highway 48 areas.
After the initial discovery and seizure of nine pitbulls tethered by what Hall described in the statement as “very short” and heavy chains, on August 17, two people surrendered in the case two days later.
A tenth dog was also found in the residence of Shavonte Simmons, 21, and was seized.
The nine dogs found in the woods were malnourished and had wounds and scars consistent with dogfighting, Hall said. A wooden ring consistent with dogfighting was found close to the dogs, which are in the care of Halifax County Animal Control. Syringes and dog medication were found as well.
Detective B.C. Griffin, who investigated the case, said this evening it is believed dogfighting has occurred in the area within the past year. The frequency of the fights and the extent of it are something which is still under investigation, he said.
After further investigation Griffin charged Simmons and Niqwan Johnson, 22, both of Roanoke Rapids, as well as Blount, 21 with various dogfighting counts.
Simmons and Johnson face four counts of dogfighting, four counts of dog baiting, four counts of cruelty to animals, four counts of instigating cruelty to animals, and four counts of restraining dogs in a cruel manner.
Blount faces five counts of dogfighting, five counts of dog baiting, five counts of cruelty to animals, five counts of instigating cruelty to animals, and five counts of restraining dogs in a cruel manner.
Simmons and Johnson surrendered to Griffin Friday and received $10,000 bonds. They have September 28 court dates.
Anyone with the whereabouts of Blount is encouraged to call Griffin at 252-583-8201, Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444 or Halifax Central at 252-583-1991.
