Deputy Chief Andy Jackson has issued a new public notice saying people who are missing bikes have 30 days from today in which to claim them before the police department seeks a court order in which they are allowed to be donated to Angel’s Closet.
Jackson said there are currently 30 bicycles in storage as well as four push mowers, a battery charger and a pressure washer. A black scooter has been in storage since 2013.
“We’d like to give the public the opportunity to look at them,” Jackson said.
The public interested in doing so must call the police department within the 30-day period Monday through Friday at 252-533-2810 and ask for Griffin.
Evidence of ownership must be presented, evidence which either includes a receipt, a vivid description of the bike or a unique feature. “If nobody claims them in 30 days then we get a court order from a judge to properly dispose of the property.”
This means being able to give them to charity. “We usually donate them to charitable organizations such as Angel’s Closet for needy children.”
Griffin said the bikes have been found abandoned and are most likely stolen.
He said many of the bikes are in good condition.
