A 76-year-old Halifax woman died in a two-vehicle collision near Weldon High School Wednesday night.

According to initial investigation by Trooper C.C. Gall of the state Highway Patrol, Henry Harris, 77, of Weldon, was driving a 2009 Honda with two passengers shortly before 9:30 p.m. south on County Road near State Road 1731.

Harris crossed the center line and his vehicle struck the rear trailer tire of a commercial vehicle driven by Jonathan Kornegay, 70, of Jamesville. Kornegay was driving the vehicle in the northbound lane of County Road when the Honda crossed the center line.

After colliding with the trailer, the Honda collided into a ditch.

Margaret Daughtry, of Pond Road, Halifax, who was a passenger in the left rear seat died, according to the report.

Sergeant J.C. Goins said in a statement, “We believe the contributing circumstances to be exceeding safe speed and no seat belt being worn (by Daughtry).”

Gall cited Harris for driving left of center.
