RRPD blotter: June 10-12, 2016

The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to Chief Chuck Hasty:

Friday June 10, 2016

At approximately 1 a.m., Officer Joey Spragins responded to a call about the unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

The victim reported someone dropped them off at the Walgreen’s parking lot and left on their vehicle, which the victim had temporarily let them drive. Spragins gave out a description of the vehicle and began to look for it.

The officer located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop on Highway 158 near Daniels Street. Officer Spragins spoke with the driver, Randell Tavaris Garner, 34, of Roanoke Rapids.

Garner told Spragins he was returning the vehicle to the victim after he found out where it was.

During the investigation Spragins learned Garner had several outstanding orders for arrest and his license was revoked. Garner was arrested on the outstanding orders for arrest and charged with driving while license revoked. He received a $3,300 bond and July 1 court date.

Master Officer Gerald Morris assisted.

Saturday June 11, 2016

At approximately 8:45 a.m., Lieutenant Jeff Baggett and Officer Jeffrey Mason responded to a domestic disturbance call in the 1100 block of Oakland Street.

Halifax Central advised officers a male and female were fighting all morning.

When officers arrived at the residence they could not get anyone to answer the door. They left, returned and made a second attempt to get someone to the door. A woman came out and spoke with the officers.

The woman did not want the man arrested. While the officers talked to the woman, Caleb Lee Snider, 25, came out and began arguing with the woman and tried to push through the officers to get to her several times.

Snider was arrested and charged with assault on law enforcement officers and resist, delay and obstruct. He received a $1,000 bond and July 8 court date.

Sergeant Mike Moseley and Master Officer Adam Salmon assisted.

Sunday June 12, 2016

At approximately 1:30 a.m., Lieutenant Perry Parks responded to a suspicious vehicle call on the Cook Out parking lot.

During the investigation, Parks determined the driver, Ronald Tinsley Barnes, 28, of Roanoke Rapids, was impaired. Barnes, who was released to a responsible person until his August 12 court date, was charged with driving while impaired.

Sergeant Daniel Jenkins and Officer Greg Colson assisted.

At approximately 3:45 a.m., Master Officer Roy Ball responded to a shots fired and fighting call in the area of Nelson Drive and Dublin Street.

Ball encountered Maurice Lamar West, 26, of Roanoke Rapids, who was intoxicated.

Ball arrested and charged him with drunk and disruptive. He received a $500 bond and July 15 court date.

Jenkins, Colson and Officer Jamie Hardy responded.

At approximately 2 p.m., Mason responded to a fight call at Fairfax Motel.

The victim reported several people came to his room to start a fight and forced their way in. The victim was assaulted and treated at Halifax Regional.

The matter remains under investigation and anyone with information is encouraged to call the police department at 252-533-2810 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.

At approximately 4:15 p.m., Baggett responded to a sexual assault call.

Investigator Gorton Williams took over the case and developed Frank James Jones III, 36, of Roanoke Rapids, as the alleged suspect.

Jones was arrested around 7 p.m. and charged with rape, assault by strangulation, communicating threats, false imprisonment and also served with a fugitive warrant from the state of Virginia for grand larceny. Jones was jailed without the opportunity for bond and has a June 15 court date.
