RRPD blotter: May 9-11, 2016

The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to Chief Chuck Hasty:

Monday May 9, 2016

At approximately 1:30 a.m., Lieutenant Jeff Baggett conducted a traffic stop on East Tenth near Charlotte Street for a violation.

Baggett determined the driver, Tyrone Lamont Hedgepeth, 42, of Gaston, was impaired and had narcotics and paraphernalia in the vehicle.

Baggett arrested and charged Hedgepeth with driving while impaired, driving while license revoked, possession of schedule VI, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Hedgepeth received a $750 bond and a June 10 court date.

Officer Alex Green assisted.

At approximately 9:45 a.m., Sergeant Terrence Tyler responded to a larceny call at Walmart.

Loss prevention reported Jaquan Gatling, 16, of Margarettsville, took items and concealed them.

Gatling gave Tyler false information and he was also in possession of a concealed BB gun.

Tyler arrested and charged Gatling with shoplifting-concealment of merchandise, carrying a concealed weapon and resisting/delaying/obstructing an officer.

He received a $1,000 bond and May 27 court date.

Master Officer Jonathan Benthall and Officer Jason Williams assisted.

Tuesday May 10. 2016

At approximately 9:45 a.m., officers responded to a shots fired call in the area of Second and Monroe streets.

Benthall spoke with a witness and gave out a description of the possible suspects.

Tyler and Officer Chris Biggerstaff located a person and juveniles in the area.

While talking with Roscoe Leon Hawkins, 32, of Roanoke Rapids, Benthall located a concealed gun, which was reported stolen from Newport News.

He was charged with possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a concealed weapon.

He received a $1,000 bond and June 15 court date.

During the investigation a second gun was recovered by Tyler from a bush.

A 14-year-old juvenile was taken into custody for possession of a concealed weapon and possession of a handgun by a minor.

The juvenile was taken into secured custody and will have a hearing at a later date.

Officer Matt Hunsucker assisted.

At approximately 8:45 p.m., Officer Patrick Smith responded to an assault call at Lee's Market at highways 158 and 48.

The victim reported Nora Ann Hittibell Hawkins, 25, of Roanoke Rapids, was asked to leave but refused and assaulted two of the store's staff members. She also reportedly attempted to take an item from the store.

Smith arrested and charged Hawkins with assault inflicting serious injury, simple assault, trespassing and attempted larceny.

She received a $1,500 bond and June 3 court date.

Master Officer Gerald Morris and Officer Natara Velazquez assisted .

Wednesday May 11, 2016

At approximately 1:30 a.m., Officer Joey Spragins responded to a trespasser call at Sheetz.

Store staff reported Brenda Pender Haymond, 58, of Roanoke Rapids, was sleeping inside the business and refused to leave.

Spragins also asked her to leave and she refused to do so, the officer arresting her for trespassing.

She received a $500 bond and July 1 court date.

Sergeant Mark Peck assisted.

At approximately 7:15 p.m., Spragins responded to a larceny call at Belk.

Loss prevention reported Michael Wayne Finch, 28, of Benson, concealed items while inside the store. Spragins arrested and charged him with shoplifting-concealment of goods and also served him with fugitive warrant from Virginia for credit card fraud.

He received a $51,000 bond and May 27 court date.

Peck assisted.

At approximately 8 p.m., the police department received information on the location of Matthew Scott Gay, 25, of Roanoke Rapids, who had numerous warrants.

Morris, Smith and Velazquez located Gay in the 2400 block of Bolling Road where he was taken into custody without trouble.

Gay was served with an order for arrest, warrants for two counts of forgery of an instrument, two counts of uttering a forged instrument, possess a counterfeit instrument and two counts of conspiracy.

He received a $16,050 bond and July 20 court date.

One of the conspiracy charges was from a matter Morris and Velazquez investigated on April 19 when officers responded to a call about a larceny at Lowe's Home Improvement.

Items were taken from the store by Cody Daniel Bell, 20, and Robert Gerald Bell, 26, of Roanoke Rapids, who were arrested on April 21.

The other charges stem from an investigation by Detective B.C. Griffin of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.
