A Weldon man was arrested this morning for possessing a weapon as a convicted felon.
Dontrez Malik Harris, 24, was arrested and charged after Halifax County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the Sunnydale Drive area of Roanoke Rapids off Highway 48 around 10 a.m.
Major Anzell M. Harris said deputies identified the man as he was reaching inside a car.
Deputy K. Tillery noticed a handgun sticking out from under the seat of the vehicle.

Tillery learned Mr. Harris is a convicted felon and arrested and charged him with the crime.
Mr. Harris was convicted in Northampton County in 2020 for conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon in Northampton County in 2017.
According to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, he was sentenced to a minimum term of two years and a month to three years and six months in January of 2020 and was released on December 8 of 2021.
His parole has expired.
He remains in the Halifax County Detention Center on a $10,000 secured bond and has a Friday district court date.
He also has a December 9 district court date for driving while license revoked.
