The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to Chief Shane Guyant:

On Friday around 2 a.m. Officer P. Dueitt and Lieutenant D. Jenkins responded to a hit-and-run crash at a restaurant on Roanoke Avenue.

Jenkins located the vehicle on Roanoke Avenue near Medlin Street.

The vehicle was stopped and the driver was identified as Detron Robinson, 43, of Roanoke Rapids.

As Robinson stepped out of his vehicle, Dueitt detected the strong odor of alcohol.

Guyant said Robinson stated he had been drinking earlier that night. He was asked to submit to a portable breath sample, which he refused.

Jenkins conducted some field sobriety tests and concluded that Robinson was impaired.

Robinson refused to submit a breath sample at the police department and a blood sample was obtained.

Robinson was taken before a magistrate and charged with DWI and misdemeanor hit and run with property damage.

He received a $750 bond and has an April 12 district court appearance.

Suspicious person

On Monday around noon, Captain G.L. Williams responded to a call of a suspicious person at an ATM at an East Tenth Street bank.

Williams located the man at West Becker Drive near the ATM. He was identified as Dan Demont Carter, 41, of Roanoke Rapids.

Carter was carrying a black backpack and had a camouflage mask in his hand.

Williams learned Carter had an outstanding order for arrest for failure to appear from Northampton County for possessing a stolen motor vehicle. He was placed under arrest without trouble.

Carter’s backpack contained a blue Cobra .380 caliber semi-auto handgun and a multi-colored Hydro Strike splash ball toy gun.

Guyant said the bank was closed for President's Day.

Carter was convicted of second-degree murder in Halifax County in 2009 and was released from prison in 2016.

Carter was charged with the order for arrest from Northampton County and possession of a firearm by felon.

Carter was initially jailed without the opportunity for bond. He had a first district court appearance the following day and is no longer listed as being in custody in the Halifax County Detention Center.

He has a subsequent district court appearance in Halifax County on March 28 for felony larceny of a vehicle and possession of a firearm by a felon and a March 14 district court date in Northampton County for felony larceny of a motor vehicle.

Subsequently, the credit card was used within 30 minutes of the victim noticing it missing at a convenience store on Old Farm Road.

This credit card was also used at a gas station on Tenth Street, another gas station in Weldon, and several ATM locations.

On Friday the police department retrieved a photo of the possible suspect.
