A Roanoke Rapids man was charged with a sex offense against a child and other counts following an early-morning investigation Saturday.

Roanoke Rapids police Chief Shane Guyant said the ultimate arrest of 36-year-old Eric Delane Newsome began when officers were dispatched to Creek Drive after a call that a girl was being taken advantage of by a man.

Officer C. Walker and Lieutenant D. Hundley responded to the area and were directed to Newsome. Officers learned that Newsome had an outstanding order for arrest from Northampton County for disorderly conduct.

Newsome became combative and non-compliant while Walker was attempting to arrest him. He pushed Walker. Newsome was taken into custody after a brief struggle.

Sergeant D. Newsome continued to investigate the original complaint regarding the girl and with assistance from Captain H. Phillips and Investigator N. Bankert the investigation concluded that Eric Newsome had engaged in sexual activity with a girl less than 16 during the evening.

Eric Newsome was subsequently charged with the Northampton County OFA, assault on a government official, resist/delay/obstruct, and statutory rape of a child less than or equal to 15.   He remains in custody without the opportunity for bond and a November 30 court date.
