The former Rite Aid located at 1825 East Tenth Street will become a Dollar Tree store, according to an upfit plan submitted to the Roanoke Rapids Planning and Development Department.

City Planner Kristyn Anderson confirmed the commercial building permit application was submitted in March and the hard copy plans were received in April.

The plans were approved in May.

The total square footage of the building is 11,376. The project cost of the upfit is $193,392.

It was not immediately clear whether the Dollar Tree located on Premier Boulevard will remain open.

The company is ranked 137 on the Fortune 500 list, and the corporation is made up of Dollar Tree and Family Dollar, the companies serving North American for more than 63 years with roots going back nearly 70 years.

In 2010 Dollar Tree opened its 4,000th store and expanded into Canada with the purchase of 86 Dollar Giant Stores. That helped the company reach $9.13 billion in sales at the end of 2012.

In 2014 the company opened its 5,000th store while in 2020, it exceeded $25 billion in annual sales for the first time since the organization started.

Last year the company completed the rollout of its $1.25 price-point initiative to all Dollar Tree stores chainwide in the United States — the first price change in over 36 years.
