A man and woman were charged Wednesday on counts linked to sexual assault involving a juvenile.

Chief Deputy Scott Hall of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office declined comment on the relationship between Matthew Daniel Richardson,34,and Chakia Whitehead, 37, both of Roanoke Rapids.

Nine of the 27 counts Richardson faces show he had a custodial role with the victim, who was 15.

Hall said the victim reported the matter to the sheriff’s office on January 24.

In a statement Hall said Richardson was allegedly having sexual intercourse with the victim from January to September of last year.

Investigation by Detective S.A. Bryant led to the following charges against Richardson: nine counts of statutory rape; nine counts of indecent liberties with a minor and nine counts of sex act by custodian.

Bryant’s investigation also reportedly linked Whitehead to the reputed crimes and she faces charges of felony conspiracy and felony child abuse.

Richardson received a $100,000 bond while Whitehead received a $25,000 bond.

Both have February 20 court dates.

Deputy Z. Byers assisted with the arrest.
