Roanoke Rapids police are investigating a scam in which $2,500 was loaded onto five gift cards and the victimized store never received payment after a clerk was distracted.

Investigator Elliott Johnson said the couple also left Walmart with nearly $150 in baby items and gift bags.

The couple is believed to have committed the same type of crimes in Raleigh and Rocky Mount, the Rocky Mount scam occurring on the same day as the one in Roanoke Rapids — January 7.

The couple commenced the scam at the Roanoke Rapids store around 10:50 a.m. by taking five cards to a clerk.

The clerk loaded each card with $500 but when she was distracted by the man she never received the money from the couple.

The couple left the store with the cards and were seen leaving on a burgundy Cadillac.

Johnson said the store voided the gift cards but the couple still left with the other items.

Anyone with information on the identity of the suspects is encouraged to contact law enforcement; the police department at 252-533-2810; Johnson at 252-578-3965, or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
