The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to Chief Bobby Martin:

Thursday Sergeant M.H. Worrell and Agent C.W. Batchelor conducted a follow up on a complaint of drug activity in the area of Woodberry Apartments, located in the 1100 block of Georgia Avenue.

Martin said drug activity was observed and three people were detained and searched.

Jalen Garner, 27, of Roanoke Rapids, was found in possession of cocaine.

Marijuana and paraphernalia were also located inside a vehicle.

Further investigation led agents to believe there were more narcotics located in the residence that Garner had been seen coming from several times.

A search of the apartment yielded methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, and fentanyl.

There were also multiple items of paraphernalia located consistent with the preparation, sale, and distribution of narcotics.

Garner was charged with two counts of trafficking opiates/opium/opioid, possession with intent to sell or deliver schedule II, felony possession of schedule II, possession with intent to sell or deliver heroin, felony possession of heroin, possession with intent to sell or deliver methamphetamine, felony possession of methamphetamine, possession of schedule VI, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Garner received a $100,000 bond and an October 27 court date.

He has numerous pending dates in both Halifax County superior and district courts.

Thursday shortly before 8:30 p.m. Master Officer S. Langley and Officer C. Walker were in the area of Highway 158 and Old Farm Road when they noticed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed north on Old Farm Road.

The officers turned around and followed the vehicle and noticed it was all over the road.

Following a traffic stop to check on the driver, identified as Melinda Garner, 54, the officers detected the odor of alcohol.

Garner, of Roanoke Rapids, was placed under arrest and carried before a magistrate who charged her with DWI.

She was released to a responsible party and given a November 18 court date.
