The Roanoke Rapids Police Department had a rash of car breaking and entering from Saturday through Monday.

Chief Bobby Martin said firearms and other valuables were stolen.

The break-ins occurred in the area of the 600 and 700 blocks of  Williams to Carolina streets as well as other neighborhoods within those communities.

All of the vehicles entered were unlocked. “We recommend that people not leave valuables in their cars and make sure to lock your cars,” Martin said. “We also recommend the use of outdoor lighting and surveillance cameras.”

Martin said one victim went out to his vehicle to go to work and discovered a person was in the act of going through it.

When the victim yelled at him the suspect, who was armed with a handgun, held the victim at gunpoint and forced him to walk down the back alley from his residence and made him lay down. The suspect then fled the area. “Please be mindful that we do not recommend that you attempt to confront anyone. Call 911 and give as much good information about the suspect as you can — description, clothing, and direction of travel.”

The police department encourages residents to be aware of their surroundings when leaving in the morning hours.

If you see someone that appears suspicious call 911 and give the best description you can.
