Tammi Elizabeth Sutton will have a first district court appearance in Halifax County Monday after Fayetteville police served county warrants taken out on her after her disappearance last year.
Sutton, who is the founder of KIPP Eastern North Carolina Schools, faces charges of abandonment of a child, non-support of a child and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, Chief Deputy Scott Hall of the sheriff’s office said.
Fayetteville police served the warrants to Sutton on March 24. Hall said it was not clear how long the 47-year-old had been in the Fayetteville area.
The charges reflect that Sutton failed to provide adequate means of support to her juvenile child after she was reported missing, Hall said.
Sutton was released on a $5,000 bond.
At the time the charges were lodged the sheriff’s office said the investigation showed Sutton left the Roanoke Rapids area on her own accord but investigators learned her juvenile daughter was left unattended and abandoned.
Hall said at the time the warrants were filed the child was safe and being cared for.
