Two Rocky Mount men died in a collision Tuesday evening off Highway 481 in the Enfield area, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

According to a preliminary report by Trooper D.P. Efird, the two-vehicle collision occurred shortly after 5:15 p.m.

Douglas Whitby, 23, of Roanoke Rapids, was traveling north on Bellamys Mill Road and failed to yield to traffic. He collided with a Dodge Charger traveling east on Highway 481.

Efird said Whitby has been cited for failure to stop for a stop sign and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. He is tentatively scheduled for a district court date in Halifax County on June 13.

The crash claimed the lives of two backseat passengers in the Charger — Jesus Rodriguez, 25, who was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene and Moises Orozco, 28, who died en route to the hospital.

A front passenger in the Charger, Harvin Resindez, 26, of Rocky Mount, was airlifted to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The collision caused Whitby’s truck to travel off the roadway to the right and strike several small trees.

The Charger went off the roadway to the left and collided with a pole. The left rear of the vehicle collided with an abandoned building before coming to rest partially inside the structure.

Efird continues to investigate which could lead to further charges.
