Roanoke Rapids police are investigating a shooting death which occurred in the 1000 block of Burton Street around 10:30 this morning.

Chief Bobby Martin said the man who died in the shooting sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his upper and lower body and a second man with a gunshot wound to his lower body was transported for medical treatment. As of this report the police department is awaiting word on his condition.

Martin identified the deceased victim as Edward Leon High, 40, of Roanoke Rapids. High was pronounced deceased at the scene. He also declined to immediately discuss motive and the type of weapon used.

He said the shooting this morning is not related to any of the shootings which have occurred in the downtown mill village area.

Officers responded to the call and received a vehicle description and were told multiple shots had been fired.

Investigators have developed a person of interest in the case and continue to follow-up on leads and information from the scene.
